About my collections

My ratings.

1:Painful, 2:Poor, 3:Dull, 4:Disappointing, 5:Just OK, 6:Average, 7:Good,
8:Very Good, 9:Great, 10:Excellent

My movie collection lists every film I can remember watching, be it at the cinema, on the telly or on video or dvd. I have also listed, in the TV section surprisngly enough, the main televison programmes I can remember watched at some point or other, even going back to childhood. These include cartoons & kids programmes I sit down & watch with my 5 year old son.

I use specialised social cataloging sites such as LibraryThing & Discogs to track my book & music collections. Though I have now started listing these here at Listal too. My music section includes albums & selected 7" & 12" vinyl releases I own, have owned in the past or wish to own. You can check out my listening habits on Last.fm.

I have also done some custom lists & a handful of reviews. Please do check 'em out feel free to comment and of course cast a vote if you feel that way inclined. Cheers. :-)

Weird Electronic Loveliness

Posted : 2 months, 1 week ago on 27 April 2009 04:57 (A review of Warp 10+3: The Remixes)

The 3rd of the Warp 10 albums marking the label’s 10th anniversary. This one features IDM remixes of the label’s back catalogue. Weird electronic loveliness.

The House Sound of Sheffield

Posted : 2 months, 1 week ago on 27 April 2009 04:56 (A review of Warp 10+2 Classics)

Do you want bass, bleeps, clangs, clinks & clonks? Then look no further than this superlative release of all the early Warp classics. Play the five tones.

Classic House Grooves

Posted : 2 months, 1 week ago on 27 April 2009 04:55 (A review of Warp 10+1 Influences)

A collection of classic house grooves that influenced the stripped down bass heavy techno sound that Warp became so famous for in it’s early years. Good stuff.

Words of wisdom

Posted : 2 months, 3 weeks ago on 9 April 2009 03:01 (A review of Quotations From Chairman Mao Tse-Tung)

“Communists should set an example .. be self-sacrificing .. least prejudiced .. win the support of the masses.” Shame he didn’t follow his own advice.

Sets the Scene

Posted : 2 months, 3 weeks ago on 9 April 2009 02:58 (A review of Terminator Salvation: From the Ashes (the Official Movie Prequel Novel))

A quick setting-the-scene read for the upcoming movie. Cost less than the price of a cinema ticket so it’d been rude not to. I now await the film with eager anticipation so as far as a marketing exercise for the film is concerned it's job done. I'll definitely be first in line for a movie ticket once the film is released. I'd recommend this book to any fanboy or girl of the Terminator franchise wanting a back story to the new film. Indeed I'd go as far to suggest that it's an essential read.

Shocking

Posted : 2 months, 3 weeks ago on 9 April 2009 02:48 (A review of Rollerball)

Trashball. An epic cinematic fail. An insult to the original 1975 Rollerball film.

Classically Dull

Posted : 3 months ago on 1 April 2009 11:49 (A review of A Canticle for Leibowitz)

I found this acclaimed classic of science fiction a rather dull and pedestrian read. Far too much religious claptrap for my liking. I find the idea of the roman catholic church becoming the repository and guardian of human knowledge a lot more frightening than nuclear armageddon itself.

Bleeptastic

Posted : 3 months ago on 29 March 2009 11:39 (A review of Network Records Bleep Era Mix)

This is an excellently crafted mp3 mix available for download at the Sheffield Bleep Blog.

Network Records are one my favourite labels of all time. Many of their early releases are classic techno tunes that along with Warp's early stuff helped define the UK techno movement. These tracks have withstood the test of time and sound as fresh today as they did 15-20 years ago. Check out their two compilation albums Bio Rhythm - Dance Music With Bleeps and Bio Rhythm 2 808 909 1991.

Sheffield Bleep - A premier electronic net radio station.

How about this for a twist?

Posted : 4 months ago on 1 March 2009 07:07 (A review of Lucky Number Slevin)

Slevin Kelevra & Mr Goodcat want to hope & pray that Nick Fisher doesn't have a son who grows up wanting to revenge the death of his father.

Epic, Explosive Excitement

Posted : 7 months, 1 week ago on 26 November 2008 03:18 (A review of The Hunt for Atlantis)

A thrill-a-minute rollercoaster ride of an adventure novel. This is the literary equivalent of a dolby surround sound IMAX movie that just explodes at you page after page.

A brilliant female archaeologist, Nina Wilde hunts for the legend that is Atlantis. Assisted & protected by wise-cracking ex-SAS trooper Eddie Chase their adventure spans the globe.

It's fast-paced with likeable characters & sprinkled with a healthy dose of very British humour. If you like Clive Cussler, James Rollins or Matthew Reilly then this book is for you.
